An official statement from Afyonkarahisar Municipality clarified that the recent inquiry involving Mayor Burcu Köksal is a standard procedure previously applied to past mayors.
According to a live broadcast on the “Kanalafyon” YouTube channel, Afyonkarahisar Governorate’s statement emphasized the routine nature of the inquiry and mentioned that similar requests for statements had been made for prior mayors as well.
How the Event Unfolded
The incident began when Moussa K. Gatea, an Iraqi national, filed a complaint with the Republic Prosecutor’s Office, alleging that the municipality had refused to grant him a license to open a gym. The Prosecutor’s Office forwarded the matter to the Ministry of Interior, which then requested the Afyonkarahisar Governorate to investigate. Subsequently, the Governorate sent a letter to Mayor Burcu Köksal asking for a written statement.
In her response, Mayor Köksal stated that there was no record of any application by the said individual to the municipality.

The Governorate reiterated that such actions are typical administrative procedures and clarified that the Ministry of Interior could have alternatively sent an inspector to investigate the situation. However, they opted for the less intrusive method of requesting a statement via the Governorate.
