CHP’s Deniz Yücel Criticizes AKP’s Rebranding of Yassı Ada, Calls Out Lack of Genuine Democracy

By Haberyaz May28,2024

CHP Deputy Chairperson and Party Spokesperson Deniz Yücel expressed strong criticism of the AKP government, stating that renaming Yassı Ada to “Democracy and Freedom Island” has not brought any genuine democracy or freedom to Turkey. Yücel highlighted that the initial action taken following the name change was a zoning regulation, transforming the island into a concrete jungle.

He pointed out, “The sports hall where trials were conducted and the room where Adnan Menderes stayed were demolished. They brought freedom only to concrete.”

Yücel also addressed President Erdoğan’s statement that “the constitution sits at the top of the hierarchy of norms.” He remarked, “Those who do not even implement the current Constitution, despite changing dozens of its articles, cannot be considered sincere in drafting a new, more democratic Constitution.”

Furthermore, Yücel urged Erdoğan to focus on enforcing decisions made by the Constitutional Court, instead of giving democracy lessons annually on May 27 in memory of Adnan Menderes and his associates. He asserted that there will be no “Century of Turkey Constitution” but rather only a “Constitution of the Republic of Turkey.”

These remarks were made by CHP Deputy Chairperson and Party Spokesperson Deniz Yücel.
