UN General Assembly President Calls for Immediate Ceasefire on Middle East Conflict Anniversary
On the occasion of the first anniversary of October 7, Philemon Yang, President of the 79th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, issued a written statement delivering significant messages. Yang highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
In his statement, Yang reminded that the Middle East has long been a witness to death, destruction, and displacement. Emphasizing that the suffering must end, Yang said, “We need an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and a return to dialogue for diplomatic resolutions to the regional conflicts.”
Additionally, Yang stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved through military means and that sustainable peace can only be achieved through a two-state solution based on the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions. He stated that this solution would bring security and peace to both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
Yang also called on all parties involved in the conflict, including Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah, to comply with the requirements of international humanitarian law. Moreover, he underscored the urgent need for measures to protect civilians and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.
