U.S. Secretary of State Announces Return of American Detainees

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced that Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, and Alsu Kurmasheva are returning to the United States to reunite with their families. Blinken expressed gratitude to everyone involved in obtaining their freedom and thanked allies and partners who facilitated the agreement.

According to sources from the U.S. Embassy, the three Americans had been detained abroad for various reasons. Paul Whelan was detained in Russia for years, journalist Evan Gershkovich was held in Russia on espionage charges, and Alsu Kurmasheva was detained in a different country.

Throughout this process, the U.S. worked through diplomatic engagements and cooperation with allies to secure the release of its citizens. Blinken emphasized that this development is a result of international collaboration. The U.S. government continues to work diligently to bring back citizens detained overseas.
