Turkey Deepens Diplomatic and Economic Ties with Ethiopia and Somalia

On October 13, 2023, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, held a joint press conference in Ankara with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taye Atske Selassie, and Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi.

During the meeting, the officials discussed Turkey’s relations with African countries and assessed the current situation in these nations. Hakan Fidan emphasized the historical and cultural bonds between Turkey and Africa, and stressed the need to further deepen these relations economically and diplomatically.

Security issues faced by African countries and the potential support that Turkey could provide in addressing these challenges were also on the agenda. Fidan emphasized Turkey’s ongoing commitment to supporting development projects in Africa and highlighted the importance of cooperation.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Taye Atske Selassie, underscored the significance of the relationship with Turkey and expressed the aim to further enhance trade and cultural cooperation between the two countries. Selassie also thanked Turkey for its support on the international stage.

Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, voiced his appreciation for Turkey’s contributions to peace and stability in Somalia. Fiqi expressed a desire to advance strategic collaboration with Turkey.

At the conclusion of the press conference, all parties affirmed their commitment to strengthen relations and increase joint projects.
