Japan Faces a Significant Increase in Elderly Without Relatives by 2050
Japan Research Institute projects that by 2050, over 10% of individuals aged 65 and above will have no close relatives. According to the study, the number of elderly people without third-degree relatives, including grandchildren, will reach 4.48 million. This scenario raises serious concerns regarding funeral arrangements and elderly care services.
Funeral and Care Process Concerns
The Japan Research Institute highlighted concerns over who will handle the funerals of the 4.48 million elderly and who will be their guarantors in nursing homes. Additionally, the number of elderly individuals documented as needing care is expected to rise to 590,000 by 2050.
As the population ages, the decreasing number of relatives and lower marriage rates are impacting the services offered by nursing homes and medical facilities for the elderly. In this context, many institutions require a guarantor to provide care services to the elderly. The severity of the issue holds a significant place on Japan’s agenda.
