Increase in Femicide Following Annulment of Istanbul Convention Sparks Outcry

The annulment of the Istanbul Convention has brought the alarming rise in femicides into sharp focus. According to official data, since the Convention’s cancellation, at least 2,118 women have been killed. This tragic figure intensifies concerns over gender equality and women’s rights.

Accountability Demand

The General President of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Women’s Branch expressed her criticism of this situation, delivering a strong message that the system protecting and acquitting killers will be held accountable. By stating, “We will definitely hold accountable those who kill, protect, and acquit!”, she emphasized their determination to protect women and defend their rights.

Significance of the Istanbul Convention

The President highlighted the vital importance of the Istanbul Convention for women, underscoring that they, as citizens, have not abandoned the agreement. Declaring, “We are not giving up on our lifeline, the Istanbul Convention, and we will not give up,” she affirmed the ongoing struggle for women’s rights.

Despite the annulment of the Convention, gratitude was expressed to the We Will Stop Femicide Platform for monitoring femicide statistics. This platform provides an alternative to the government’s public data, daily documenting the extent of violence against women.

This unveiled scenario presented to society is considered a significant step in raising awareness about femicides.
