Government’s Media Pressure and Triangular Structure

The government has intensified its pressure on the media to influence public opinion, creating a model that showcases a triangular structure. This structure comprises the Directorate of Communications, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), and the Press Advertisement Agency.

Targeting Journalists

The Directorate of Communications continues to target journalists with its statements and actions. This situation is considered a threat that prevents the public from accessing accurate information. The attacks on the independence of journalists also damage media ethics and jeopardize free journalism.

Pressure on Media Outlets

RTÜK aims to intimidate media outlets by imposing fines. These penalty decisions make it challenging for the media to broadcast independently, prompting them to produce content under the government’s control.

Financial Intimidation Strategy

The Press Advertisement Agency has implemented a policy of financially squeezing media outlets by not providing advertisements. Consequently, financially struggling media organizations are forced to conform to lines drawn by the government.

This triangular structure plays a significant role in restricting the freedom of information in Turkey by keeping the media environment under pressure.
