CHP Vice Chairman Criticizes Surname Policies Affecting Women

By Haberyaz Jul10,2024

CHP Vice Chairman Burhanettin Bulut has voiced criticism regarding current surname regulations affecting women in Turkey. Speaking to the press, Bulut emphasized that the right to decide on their surname should belong solely to women, advocating for a more liberal approach in the name of democratization.

Bulut, who is also a CHP Member of Parliament for Adana, pointed out that the existing practices are unparalleled in democratic countries. “You can’t talk about democratization while insisting on regulations that don’t exist in any other democratic country. Women alone decide what they wear, where they go, and what surname they use,” said Bulut.

These statements have surfaced amid ongoing debates on women’s rights and equality in Turkey. Bulut argued that democracy necessitates respecting women’s choices in these matters.
