CHP Deputy Leader Criticizes Communication Directorate’s Instagram Ban as Constitutional Violation

By Haberyaz Aug3,2024

Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) Deputy Leader Burhanettin Bulut has openly criticized the Communication Directorate’s decision to impose an access ban on Instagram, labeling the act as a punishment directed at citizens. Bulut argued that this ban is a violation of the constitutional right to communication.

In his statement, CHP Adana MP Burhanettin Bulut emphasized the significance of digital platforms as vital communication tools of our era. “The right of people to communicate freely and access information is guaranteed by the Constitution. Such access bans restrict citizens’ freedom of expression and their right to information,” Bulut remarked.

Highlighting that a free and independent media environment is one of the cornerstones of democracy, Bulut stated that closing down social media platforms like Instagram would negatively affect societal communication and the exchange of information among the public. “The decision made by the Communication Directorate is incompatible with the principles of a democratic society and should be immediately revoked,” Bulut urged.

Although the Communication Directorate has not provided an official reason for this decision, public backlash against it continues to spread rapidly on social media. Critics have intensified their claims that these access bans serve the government’s aim to block content inconsistent with its policies.
