Brazil’s Local Elections Showcase a Decisive Political Battle
In the recent local elections in Brazil, citizens cast their votes to choose between candidates backed by the incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and former President Jair Bolsonaro. The elections called for the selection of 5,569 mayors and 58,000 city council members.
The Social Democratic Party (PSD), with the support of Lula da Silva, won 887 mayoral positions. On the other hand, the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), backed by Bolsonaro, secured 863 mayoral posts. This electoral outcome highlighted significant voter turnouts in some of Brazil’s major cities.
In cities such as São Paulo, Porto Alegre, Fortaleza, Cuiabá, Natal, and Aracaju, no candidate managed to surpass the 50% vote threshold. As a result, the top two leading candidates will face off in a runoff on October 27. In São Paulo, the incumbent Mayor Ricardo Nunes, supported by Bolsonaro, garnered 29.49% of the votes, while Lula da Silva’s candidate, Guilherme Boulos, closely followed with 29.06%.
Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro, Lula da Silva’s candidate, Eduardo Paes, secured more than 60% of the votes, significantly outpacing Bolsonaro’s nominee.
