Ali Babacan Marks 25th Anniversary of 1999 Earthquake, Calls for Improved Disaster Preparedness
Ali Babacan, the Chairman of the Deva Party, made a statement on the 25th anniversary of the August 17, 1999 earthquake.
In his statement, Babacan emphasized that cities have not been made earthquake-resistant despite the passage of a quarter-century. He noted that over 50,000 people have lost their lives due to earthquakes since the 1999 disaster. “Thousands of our citizens have died in preventable disasters. We are well aware that similar tragedies do not occur in countries where the necessary precautions are taken,” Babacan said.
Babacan paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the August 17 earthquake and subsequent tremors, expressing hope that such tragedies will not be repeated.
