AI-Manipulated Celebrity Videos Used for Investment Frauds, Reveals Cyber Crimes Department Head

The Head of the Investigation Department of the Cyber Crimes Division, Erden Şahin, has disclosed that fraudsters are using artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate videos of celebrities, misleading people with false promises of investment opportunities.

Fake Videos Created with AI:

Erden Şahin explained that criminals are altering interviews of famous TV hosts and politicians using AI to produce fake videos. These fake videos are utilized to promote investment opportunities and promise gains, deceiving people into handing over their money.

Increase in Cyber Crimes Amid COVID-19:

Şahin noted a rise in cyber crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased online activity. The boost in online shopping has attracted the attention of fraudsters, leading to the emergence of various new crime types.

Cyber Crime Prevention Efforts:

Highlighting the nationwide network of 81 cyber crime branches that operate 24/7, Şahin outlined their major focus areas: payment and information technology crimes, illegal betting, child exploitation, and proceeds of crime.

Fraud Techniques:

Fraudsters manipulate celebrity speeches with AI to create deceptive videos. By portraying trustworthy figures, these videos encourage people to invest money. Initially, small amounts are returned to gain trust, but communication is cut off when larger sums are demanded, and the fraud is executed.

Precautionary Measures and Warnings:

Şahin emphasized the importance of protecting personal information online, being cautious of messages from unknown individuals, and safeguarding devices with licensed antivirus software. He also recommended using two-factor authentication.

Siberay Monitoring:

Şahin advised the public to follow “Siberay” social media platforms for information on new crime types and preventive measures. Victims of online fraud are encouraged to report to the nearest law enforcement, cyber crime units, or the public prosecutor’s offices.
