Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç: “Turkey Will Remain the Strongest Supporter of Turkish Cypriots”

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç emphasized the importance of recognizing the international status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as an equal and sovereign state, stating, “Turkey will continue to be the strongest supporter of the just cause of the Turkish Cypriots and will never leave them alone.”

Minister Tunç addressed attendees at a meeting in Bartın, attended by TRNC President Ersin Tatar, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Peace Operation, which brought peace and freedom to the Turkish Cypriot people. He highlighted that unfair attacks and oppression were halted with Turkey’s Peace Operation, demonstrating that Turkey has always stood by the Turkish Cypriots.

Tunç stressed the vital role of martyrs and veterans in achieving peace and freedom on these lands, noting, “It is our responsibility to uphold the legacy of our martyrs and veterans and to safeguard peace in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

Reflecting on the region’s history, Tunç noted the enduring challenges and oppression faced by Turkish Cypriots since the 1960s. He articulated the primary goal of ensuring peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region. He reaffirmed the commitment of both Turkey and the TRNC to reach a fair and lasting solution on the island.

The Minister also addressed the obstruction of equal-based solutions by counterparts, reaffirming the Turkish Cypriots as a fundamental and founding element of the island. He advocated for a two-state solution, as proposed by President Erdogan, and emphasized that peace is achievable only when the rights of the Turkish Cypriot side are fully recognized and negotiated equally.

Tunç called for the international acknowledgment of TRNC’s status as an independent and sovereign state. He highlighted the significance of the TRNC attaining observer status in the Organization of Turkic States and the Turkic Parliamentary Assembly. He expressed determination to advance towards the formal recognition of TRNC as an independent state.

Minister Tunç emphasized Turkey’s unwavering support, led by President Erdogan, for the welfare and peace of the Turkish Cypriot brothers. He stated, “This cause is deeply rooted, a cause of the Turkish nation, our martyrs, and our veterans.”

Reiterating Erdogan’s vision of “A fairer world is possible,” Tunç emphasized that Turkey remains a beacon of hope for the oppressed globally, standing firm against injustices.

Addressing the Palestinian issue, Tunç stressed Turkey’s clear stance and support for the Palestinian cause. He condemned the crimes in Gaza and expressed belief in the eventual freedom of Palestine. He affirmed Turkey’s ongoing commitment to justice.

Tunç also highlighted the significance of judicial cooperation between Turkey and the TRNC, fostering mutual understanding and goodwill.

Reflecting on the devastating earthquake of February 6, 2023, Tunç acknowledged the profound loss, particularly the “champion angels” from Northern Cyprus. He assured that the judicial processes against those responsible are being pursued vigorously and that justice will prevail.
