President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey expressed his condolences for those who lost their lives in the August 17, 1999 Marmara Earthquake and extended his sympathies to the families affected by the tragedy.

Erdoğan emphasized the constant awareness of Turkey’s vulnerability to earthquakes and stated that the country never forgets this reality. He highlighted the construction of 3.3 million housing units across Turkey’s urban transformation projects.

Reflecting on past initiatives, Erdoğan noted that 20 million citizens have been provided with safe homes. Following the February 6 earthquakes, 300,000 housing units have begun construction in the affected areas, with 76,000 units already delivered to earthquake survivors. He announced plans to deliver an additional 200,000 housing units to rightful owners by the end of the year.

President Erdoğan affirmed that efforts are ongoing to make earthquake-affected regions more resilient and grander with all available resources. He also stressed the continuous development of new projects to encourage residents in risk-prone buildings to reconstruct their homes. Erdoğan reiterated the commitment to enhance all cities’ preparedness against any disaster until the work sees tangible results.
