Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler Celebrates a Century of Diplomacy with Japan in Istanbul

Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler attended a reception in Istanbul to commemorate the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Japan. The event was held in honor of the visit by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships JS KASHIMA and JS SHIMAKAZE to Istanbul. Güler was accompanied by Navy Commander Admiral Ercüment Tatlıoğlu and Deputy Minister Alpaslan Kavaklıoğlu.

In his speech, Minister Yaşar Güler highlighted the long-standing friendship between Turkey and Japan. He recalled the first Japanese military ship “Seiki” visiting Turkey in 1878, the visit of Japan’s Prince to Turkey in 1887, and the sending of the Ertuğrul Frigate to Japan by Turkey in 1889. He emphasized the tragic accident of the Ertuğrul Frigate on its return journey from Japan, which resulted in the loss of lives among its crew, marking a profound moment in the deepening of the bilateral friendship.

Despite the geographical distance, Minister Güler noted the unique bonds of love, respect, and sympathy between the peoples of Turkey and Japan. He detailed continued cooperation in various areas and extended his well-wishes to Japan following a recent earthquake, wishing a swift recovery to the injured.

Güler remarked on the elevation of Turkey-Japan relations to a “Strategic Partnership” in 2013, noting ongoing developments in military and defense industries. He expressed excitement for the 100th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the significance of the planned visits by the TCG KINALIADA Corvette to Kushimoto, Tokyo, and Hiroshima in June 2024. He also expressed satisfaction with training activities held with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force and high-level receptions attended by Princess Akiko.

Minister Güler hoped for even stronger friendships and cooperation between the two nations in the future. He paid respect to the victims of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 79 years ago, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation for creating a more habitable world instead of conflicts that generate more problems.

Minister Güler concluded by thanking those involved in the event and extended his regards to the people of Japan. The reception ended by reaffirming the strong friendship and cooperation between Turkey and Japan.
