President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a speech marking the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, emphasized the historic step taken to counter threats to the independence of Turkish Cypriots by Turkish soldiers. Erdogan stated, “Exactly 50 years ago today, the heroic Mehmetçik took a historic step to remove the dagger aimed at the independence of the Turkish Cypriots.” The operation aimed to protect the Turkish presence on the island and ensure the safety of Turkish Cypriots.
