Commemorating the Islamic New Year: 1 Muharram and Its Historical Significance

Today marks the 1st of Muharram, the beginning of the new year 1446 in the Islamic Hijri calendar. On the anniversary of the Prophet’s migration from Mecca to Medina, we celebrate the dawn of the new Hijri year.

Muharram holds dual significance in the Islamic world, serving not only as a time of celebration but also as a month of mourning. This period includes the tragic event of Karbala, which occurred in the year 61 of the Hijri calendar. The sorrowful remembrance of Karbala peaks on Ashura Day, also falling within this month. Islamic history, therefore, begins this month with joy and soon transitions to a period of mourning.
