Environment Minister Murat Kurum Pledges Rebuilding Efforts in Quake-Hit Malatya

The newly reappointed Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, made his first official visit to Malatya, one of the provinces severely affected by the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes. During the Provincial Coordination Meeting, Kurum affirmed his commitment to the reconstruction and recovery of Malatya, emphasizing the collaborative and swift action needed to heal the scars left by what he termed “the disaster of the century.”

“With the endorsement and approval of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, I’ve returned as Minister. My first visit is here, to one of the areas most affected by the February 6 earthquakes,” Kurum stated during the meeting, which included ministry officials, the governor, mayors, and members of parliament. The discussions focused on the ongoing efforts and the current status in Malatya’s reserved areas. Kurum began by extending his condolences to those who lost their lives in the disaster.

“RIGHT AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE, OUR GOVERNMENT STARTED CONSTRUCTING HOUSING”

Highlighting their commitment made before the 2023 Presidential General Elections, Kurum said, “We promised our nation that we would revive our cities and remain engaged in the earthquake-affected regions until all the issues faced by our affected brothers and sisters were resolved. Shortly after the earthquake, our government initiated housing construction. Moreover, we quickly began construction activities in new areas as well.”

“WE WILL HEAL ALL WOUNDS CAUSED BY THE DISASTER OF THE CENTURY”

Kurum expressed solidarity with Malatya, saying, “We are children of Malatya; its troubles and joys are ours. We promise to make decisions collectively and implement them for the rebuilding and revival of Malatya. We will heal all the wounds caused by the disaster of the century and lead Malatya to much better days.”
