CHP Criticizes Proposed Tip Tax Regulation by the Ministry of Finance and Treasury

The Ministry of Finance and Treasury’s proposed regulation to impose a 10% tax on tips has sparked reactions from various sectors.

Burhanettin Bulut, the CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for Public and Media Relations and Adana Deputy, harshly criticized this initiative. “The government now has its eye on the waiter’s tip,” Bulut said, criticizing the regulation.

Bulut’s statement received significant attention and ignited widespread debate among the public. Using irony to stress that many services are free in daily life, Bulut commented, “We’re living for free. Air is free, clouds are free. Rivers and hills are free. Rain and mud are free. The exterior of cars, cinema doors, and window displays are free. Not bread and cheese, but bitter water is free. Freedom at the cost of a head, captivity is free. We’re living for free!”

The planned regulation has been met with particular opposition from hotel and restaurant workers and the unions that defend their rights. The ministry’s initiative is being criticized for potentially reducing workers’ incomes. The outcome of this public debate, which has caused significant upheaval, is eagerly awaited.
